Pinoneering Tom Rutlin developed Exerstrider poles 1988
I don't know the exact date that Tom Rutlin thought of, produced or sold his first pair of Exerstrider poles, and I'm not sure whether he does either, but this pole-walking pioneer can peg its birth to the year 1988. Not long ago, he reminded me that "2008 marks 20 years since first I launched my mission to encourage walkers (and runners) to begin using poles to maximize the health and fitness benefits of striding. It would be great if you would give some mention in your blog to the 20th anniversary of my mission to make fitness walking with specially designed poles a mainstream exercise for people of all ages, abilities and fitness goals."
I am happy to honor Rutlin's stature as a pioneer and visionary. So congratulations, Tom, on 20 years of dedication and commitment, and here's to many more years of Nordic Walking.

Hi Claire,
I would also like to congratulate Tom and his wife, Wendy! Wendy played a very major role in getting Tom started in Exerstriders. I bought my first pair of Exerstriders in 1988, and still use that pair today. My wife and I are proud to call the Rutlins "our friends". They have both given much to the activity that we love.

Thanks, Ed, for the reminder that Wendy has been Exerstriding side by side with Tom. I've never personally met Tom (or you either, of course), and he is the public face of Exerstriding. It was also he who dropped me a recent E-mail alerting me that 2008 is an anniversary year. So it was his name, not both of their names, that popped into my head as I was writing this post.
